“In the Lord’s eyes, One day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years are as a day.”(2 Peter 3:8) The inspired author’s way of saying that the eternal God stands outside the framework of time. To me it refers to those moments when I am touching the divine, when I am in some small measure in communion with the person of God – when it seems as if time stands still.
They occur when I spend a day of solitude at a retreat center every year for my birthday; sometimes during a Beethoven symphony; occasionally taking in the canopy of stars and galaxies above me while camping; frequently in contemplation after receiving the Eucharist; and every so often while just sitting on a couch with my son, Tommy, who has very limited speech, as he lays his head on my shoulder and we dwell in silence.
When Time Stands Still will serve as the theme for my reflections in the hopes that they will encourage you to stand still with the Divine, too.
Most Holy Trinity, we soon begin the Lenten Season desiring to know you more clearly, love you more fully, and serve you more readily. Stir up the hearts of our lay faithful to hunger for a deeper relationship with each Person of the Trinity, and especially the One to whom they feel most distant. Mother Mary we ask your intercession in the spiritual battle for souls, that Satan’s strategy would be thwarted so that the truth about the power of prayer would be proclaimed and embraced during the Mission Week, and many more lay men and women would AWAKE & PRAY to join the people of the remnant. Amen.
